Surprising? To Whom?

The New York Times reports this morning that a "surprising surge in revenue is curbing the deficit." Surprising to whom? I don't have to go through all the conservative arguments again here, but I think it's interesting that liberal papers just find it so surprising that tax cuts yield growth, which means more revenue.  Read the times story here.

Welcome Salvo

I've been a big fan of Touchstone Magazine for the last couple of years. It provides a useful perspective and criticism on many aspects of current culture.  Now, many of the same folks involved with Touchstone and the Crux Project introduced Salvo -- a magazine focusing on the impact of media, science, and culture on the way we live.  I'm looking forward to reading the first edition which in now available on line.

Conference Committees and Immigration Legislation

There's a lot of confusion about how a House/Senate Conference Committee will resolve differences on an immigration bill.  I outline some of the steps in this Washington Times column.  You can read it here.

Spending Restraint

Republicans need to start reminding voters every day they are serious about spending restraint. Votes here and there won't do it.  I argue here that some of these steps are underway.  But more is needed. Voters don't focus on individual congressional action. It takes sustained, systematic efforts to convince Americans, not just a one shot deal.
